Swimming
Unlike purely competitive triathlons, we allow the use of monofins and training fins (also waterwings and life jackets, if needed!). Fins help to develop muscle tone in legs and abs, so we like 'em. Pool yardage is easy to convert: 1,760 yards = 1 mile. Geological survey maps or GPS are great for tracking open water distances.
Bicycling
Any bicycle or tricycle, recumbent, or upright is fine. We want you to get out, enjoy the fresh air, and measure actual miles of travel. In some cases, indoor exercise bikes may be allowed.* Contact Ken Mange for validation procedures (Javascript must be enabled in your browser to use the following email link):
Walking/Running
Everything counts here: running, walking any speed—maybe even pushing a lawn mower.** Measure the mileage wherever possible. Pedometers are not very accurate, since they depend on precise determination of stride length and consistent terrain. Kathleen Pearson-Kares offers this website to those who want to estimate distances: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com
* Variable resistance is the problem here. Resistance applied to the rim or wheel perimeter is impossible to calibrate. Rollers or turbo fan trainers are not allowable. If you or your favorite gym have a Computrainer or an electromagnetic unit, Ken may be able to certify the machine for our purposes.
** We're techies. If you push-mow big acreage like Shannon Reeves, maybe we can calculate a credit based on lot size and cut width.
